The Fight Left In You
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…” – 2 Corinthians 10:3-6
After David has experienced so much loss in 1 Samuel 30, he asks the Lord, “shall I pursue this band?” and the Lord says, Pursue, for you shall recover it all.” That’s good news, but David has to fight for what he wants to get it. He doesn’t just happen to get everything back by divine osmosis. He has to go down to the enemy camp and get his stuff back.
If you think about it, despite everything David has lost, he still has some fight in him. Even though he has gone through so much pain and defeat, he still has the will and the determination to keep going, only by the grace of God.
The same can be true for you as well. Even with everything you’ve lost, if you have the Holy Spirit in you, you still have some fight left. Don’t ever forget that. Look at David’s question, “Lord shall I go after this band?” In other words, should I fight for what I lost? Should I engage my enemy in battle? And the Lord said, “Yes! Pursue.” If you want something, you’re going to have to fight for it.
But what’s important to realize here is that the fight is not a carnal fight. I’m not talking about going to your enemies and cussing them out. I’m not talking about keying someone’s car. No this is a spiritual fight. Paul tells us in today’s key verse that our weapons are not carnal but mighty in God.
In order to get what we’re after, in order to overcome loss, and in order to take hold of what God has for us, we’re going to have to fight. And that means continuing to fight even when we’ve been knocked down and defeated. However, by the power of the Holy Spirit living within us, we can trust that we have some fight left in us, and we can pursue whatever redemption the Lord has in store if we continue to fight, just like David did.
