Speak Truth To Yourself
She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. – Mark 5:27-29
For the past few days we’ve been talking about the woman with the bleeding disease who is healed by Jesus in Mark chapter 5. Yesterday we talked about the importance of listening to other people more than you listen to what God says about you. Today, I want us to look at the importance of monitoring who you talk to about your struggles.
I like the sense that this woman has to push and to press her way through the crowd. The Bible says when she heard about Jesus, she pressed her way pass the crowd. The Gospel of Mark tells us something that the Gospel of Luke here does not say about this point in the story. Mark says when she heard about Jesus that she said to herself, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” This woman pressed passed the crowd by talking to herself, convincing herself to do something that was a risk.
Both Gospels suggest that the woman was afraid when she came. But according to Mark, she talks her way through her situation to face her fears. She is her own motivator. She does not give others the chance to talk her out of her opportunity to pursue healing from Jesus.
There are times in life when you can't wait to be encouraged or affirmed by others, but instead you have to affirm yourself with what you know about the Lord through the Holy Spirit and through His Word. This woman could not press on if she allowed the thoughts, opinions, and ideas of other people to incarcerate her. I think this is why the Gospel writers mention the crowd. There is always someone in the crowd who has an opinion about your situation. But you can never allow the conversation of the crowd to cripple you. Instead, continue to remind yourself of God’s truth, and repeat Scripture back to yourself so that you may persevere, just like this woman did.
