Your Past Does Not Disqualify You
"And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’" - Luke 13:8-9
There is a parable of an unfruitful fig tree in which the property owner sees that the tree has failed to bear fruit for years. He decides that the tree is no longer worth keeping and plans to cut it down. In his mind, its lack of productivity meant it was worthless. But the vinedresser steps in and asks for more time. Time to nurture it, care for it, and give it a chance to grow.
There will always be people who look at your past and conclude that you’re done, that you can’t grow, that your best days are behind you. Maybe you’ve even felt this way yourself. You might look at your past mistakes, failures, and missed opportunities and wonder if there’s any hope for change. But just as the vinedresser wasn’t ready to give up on the tree, God doesn’t give up on you.
Your past does not define you, and it certainly does not disqualify you. People may try to hold your past against you, but God sees your future. Just because you haven’t been fruitful in the past doesn’t mean you won’t be fruitful in the future. Just because your last attempt failed doesn’t mean your next endeavor won’t succeed. The tree’s lack of fruit wasn’t its final story, and your failures are not the end of yours either.
God specializes in second chances. The vinedresser asked for more time to tend to the tree, to dig around it, and to fertilize it so it could bear fruit. In the same way, God wants to work in your life, digging up the old, unhealthy roots and planting new seeds of hope and possibility. Whatever has held you back—whether it’s fear, shame, or regret—does not have to control your future.
Do not be held hostage by your past. Your mistakes and shortcomings don’t get the final word. Trust that God is at work in you, nurturing you, and preparing you for growth. What didn’t happen yesterday doesn’t determine what can happen tomorrow. Your future is full of potential. You can come out of this season and thrive, no matter where you’ve been before. Trust the One who never gives up on you.
