People Are Not Perfect Either
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."- Matthew 7:1-2
Building on the idea that life is not perfect, it’s crucial to remember that people are not perfect either. Look no further than Judas to see how true that statement is. We often think of him as a wicked and evil man.
Think about this: one word, a few sentences in the Gospels, and two statements from Judas created an image that has judged him for eternity. How would you like one bad deed or one regretful remark to become the basis for people judging you for the rest of your life? None of us would want our entire character and value assessed based on one flaw, one failure, or one shameful act. Yet, this is what happens all too often in the church. We are quick to reduce people to the mistakes they have made, quick to take snippets of information, and ruin people’s lives forever.
Life is not perfect, and neither are people. If we go through life expecting perfection from others, we will constantly be disappointed. Instead, we should remember Jesus’s command not to judge others harshly. In today’s key passage, Jesus teaches us that the way we judge others is the way we will be judged. We all have our faults and failings, and none of us would want to be defined solely by our worst moments.
Just as life’s imperfections challenge us to trust in God’s grace, so do the imperfections of people challenge us to extend grace and understanding. When you encounter someone’s flaws, think about how you would want to be treated if your roles were reversed. Remember that everyone is on a journey, and we all have moments we’re not proud of.
By embracing the imperfection in others, we allow room for growth, healing, and transformation. We reflect the love and grace that Jesus shows us. So next time you’re tempted to judge someone harshly, recall the story of Judas. Consider the possibility of misunderstanding and the need for compassion. Strive to see people through the eyes of grace, acknowledging that while none of us are perfect, we are all loved by a perfect God.
