The Futility of Worry: Embracing God’s Peace
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” - Matthew 6:34
Worry is a common human experience, yet it’s one that Jesus explicitly instructs us to avoid. Why? Because worry is not only futile, but it also undermines our faith and robs us of the peace God offers.
Worrying is futile because it cannot change our circumstances or add a single hour to our lives. Despite our most anxious thoughts or frantic efforts, we cannot control the future. Worrying about tomorrow only steals the joy of today and leaves us feeling overwhelmed and powerless.
Moreover, worry reveals a lack of trust in God. When we worry, we essentially say that we don’t believe God is capable of taking care of us. We forget His promises to provide for our needs, to work all things together for our good, and to never leave us nor forsake us.
Instead of worrying, God calls us to trust Him. He assures us that He knows our needs even before we ask (Matthew 6:8). He invites us to cast all our anxieties on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). He promises to give us peace that surpasses understanding when we present our requests to Him with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6-7).
Furthermore, God calls us to live one day at a time. Each day has enough trouble of its own, and each day also comes with new mercies from God (Lamentations 3:23). Instead of worrying about tomorrow, let’s focus on trusting God today and doing what He has called us to do.
If we implement these practices, we will begin to live a life of choosing faith over worry. We will remember that our Heavenly Father, who takes care of the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, will surely take care of us (Matthew 6:26-30). And we will rest in His promises, knowing that He is faithful and His plans for us are good.
When worry tempts you to despair, remember to trust in God’s unfailing love and care. His peace is a gift freely given to those who choose to trust in Him.

In the words of Johnathan McReynolds, "Worry can't add another minute to my life!" God will continue to take of His children. The promises of God are Yes and Amen!
