Preparation From Brokenness
More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. – Romans 5:3-5
As followers of Jesus, we struggle with all kinds of trials and tough circumstances because of our brokenness as humans. There are believers struggling with low self-esteem; people wrestling with depression and addiction to drugs, alcohol, pornography, gambling; people dealing with perfection anxiety and the sense that they just don’t measure up to someone else’s standard.
Whatever your experience and struggle with brokenness, God has a word for you. And the word is that there is hope, healing, and wholeness for our brokenness. Sometimes being broken, as difficult as it is, is a part of God’s process of preparing us, preserving us, protecting us, and pushing us towards our purpose. As a matter of fact, sometimes we do not experience the power and blessings of God until after we have experienced brokenness.
Think about all of the different pictures of brokenness we see throughout creation and in Scripture. A farmer doesn’t plant his crops until the soil is broken. Caterpillars don’t turn into butterflies until their cocoon is broken. Birds never experience the power of flight until they break through the shell of their egg. In the Old Testament, olives had to be crushed and pressed so that the oil used for anointing could be extracted. Jesus could not feed the four thousand until he first broke the bread (Mark 8:1-8). The woman in Luke 7 could not pour the costly perfume over Jesus until she broke the alabaster box. The list goes on and on.
Sometimes we do not get clarity on life, on faith, on relationships, or on happiness until after a season of brokenness. But if we are following the Lord closely as we walk through the various struggles of life, we can move from brokenness to wholeness by the power and grace of God.
