Jesus Loves Everyone
“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend.” - John 15:12-13
Growing up, one hymn I loved to sing was “Jesus Loves Me.” The first verse reads, “Jesus loves me, this I know, For the Bible tells me so; Little ones to Him belong; They are weak, but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, For The Bible tells me so.”
This reminds me that everyone is deserving of love. Galatians 3:38 proclaims, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Jesus died that we ALL would have life, and life more abundantly.
We tend to judge the outside, but God judges the heart. He created us and knows what we need. So the question is, Do you love everyone or do you treat some more favorably than others?
In John 15:12-13, Jesus says, “This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend.” That is the challenge.
Who does “each other” include? That includes the saint, the sinner, the rich, the poor, the Gentile, the Jew, the Christian, the atheist, white, black, yellow, red, the hoarder, the spender, the gambler, the hypocrite, the lost, the unloved, the hurting, the family member that gets on your nerves, the coworker who is trying to sabotage you, it includes each and every child of God.
Jesus loved those that have different beliefs. He loves those who live a different lifestyle. He loves those who think differently. He loves those who speak differently. He loves those who look differently.
And loving others is not a free pass to allow manipulation and abuse. It means to rise above your feelings for them and pray for them, ask God to operate in and through them with pure intentions, seek resolutions instead of dissention, and work towards carrying out God’s purposes that a filled with equity and inclusion, and not hatred and strife.
The next time you are ready to write off a brother or sister in Christ, just remember that Jesus loves everyone, and we all are capable of being redeemed, as Christ redeems us.
