The Rich Young Ruler's Choice
"Jesus answered, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'" - Matthew 19:21
The rich young ruler approached Jesus with genuine spiritual hunger, but he walked away grieving because the cost of discipleship challenged his economic security. Jesus didn't give him a generic answer about believing or praying—He diagnosed the specific barrier keeping this particular person from the kingdom: his wealth.
This wasn't about money being inherently evil; it was about the impossibility of serving both God and mammon. The young man's riches had become his master, and Jesus was offering him freedom from that slavery. But freedom felt more frightening than bondage, so he chose to remain chained to his possessions.
We often read this story and think, "Well, I'm not rich, so this doesn't apply to me." But wealth is relative. If you have a roof over your head, food in your refrigerator, and access to clean water, you're wealthier than billions of people worldwide. The question isn't whether you're rich—it's whether your economic security has become an idol that prevents you from following Jesus fully.
The young ruler's tragedy wasn't that he had money; it was that his money had him. He couldn't imagine a life where his security came from God rather than his portfolio. Jesus was inviting him into a radical trust that would free him to invest in eternal treasures rather than temporary accumulation.
Economic discipleship requires examining what we're unwilling to give up for the sake of justice. Our possessions should serve our mission, not define it.
Honestly assess your relationship with money and possessions. What would be hardest for you to give up? Consider making a sacrificial gift to support justice work, not because you have to, but because freedom from financial idolatry is worth it.
Unlike the rich young ruler, you have the opportunity to choose freedom over security, mission over accumulation. Trust that following Jesus leads to treasures far greater than anything you might give up.
Jesus, free us from the slavery of possessions. Help us hold our wealth lightly, using it to serve Your kingdom rather than our own security. Give us courage to choose discipleship over comfort. Amen.
