Fasting To Purge
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” - 1 Corinthians 10:13
When your heart is committed to God, He rewards you in other areas of life. Today, we are discussing fasting to purge sin or addiction from your life. The definition of purge is to eliminate something or someone undesirable from one’s life.
The act of fasting is choosing to abstain from doing something for a particular length of time. The goal is to gain greater intimacy with God, better understand or hear His voice, and wait for your breakthrough. It’s about changing the heart.
When it comes to sin, it is an act of self-indulgence. We are unable to deny ourselves of the pleasure, so we continue to say yes even though we should say no. Fasting is effective because in making a conscious decision to deny your flesh, you are saying that you are in control of the issue and the issue is not in control of you—you are choosing to do something to increase your self-control and discipline (which we will discuss in a couple of days).
In this time, you are giving that issue over to God. The time you allotted to your sin is time you can give to God in worship and in prayer. You can ask Him for the strength to stay strong in your time of fasting.
When you do this, you might just be amazed at what He does to cleanse you from the bondage of addiction! If you fully commit, you will grow from your experience.
