Strength In Unity
"How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity!" - Psalm 133:1
Unity isn't uniformity—it's diverse people choosing to work together for common goals. In the fight for justice, unity becomes a powerful force that can move mountains of oppression and create valleys of hope where there once was only despair.
The civil rights movement demonstrated this principle beautifully. Black and white, young and old, rich and poor, people of different faiths and backgrounds united around the shared conviction that segregation was wrong. Their diversity became their strength, proving that justice transcends every artificial barrier humans create.
Today, we see this same power when communities unite across difference to address injustice. The interfaith coalition advocating for affordable housing. The multi-generational group fighting for climate action. The diverse congregation working to reform the criminal justice system. When God's people live together in unity, change becomes possible.
But unity requires sacrifice. It means setting aside personal preferences for collective action. It means listening to perspectives that challenge our assumptions. It means following leadership that might not look like us or share our exact theology. Unity is good and pleasant, but it's not always easy.
The Hebrew word for unity, yachad, implies being bound together despite differences. It's the same word used to describe the Trinity—distinct persons united in purpose and love. When we achieve this kind of unity in justice work, we reflect the very nature of God.
Unity multiplies our impact for justice. When diverse people unite around shared values, we become unstoppable forces for transformation.
Reach out to someone from a different background who shares your passion for justice. Find ways to collaborate, learn from each other, and build the kind of unity that creates change.
Your willingness to work in unity with others, despite differences, reflects God's heart for community. Together, you can accomplish far more than any individual effort.
God of unity, bind us together across all our differences in the common cause of justice. Help us set aside ego and preference for the greater good. Make us one as You are one. Amen.
