Purposeful Worship
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” - Romans 12:1
When it comes to worshipping God, your worship must be not only personal (see yesterday), but it must also be purposeful. Genesis 18:4-8 tells us that Abraham asked for and was granted permission to bring water to three messengers to cool their scorching feet, and also some bread and meat for them to eat in order to regain their strength from such a long journey. This stands out in the context of worship because not only was it personal, but it was also purposeful.
Abraham’s worship was not just focused on achieving personal religious ecstasy. It was not just focused upon personal religious experience. Instead, it was also improving the quality of life for others. There would be a revival if we worshipped in a way that was focused on service and sacrifice instead of self.
Don’t get it wrong. If you are in need, God will provide. Philippians 4:19 tells us, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” God will certainly work for you, and that is exactly why you must open the door and let Him in. But when you do that, make your worship about Him and about what you can do for His Kingdom.
Sometimes God has to change us to prepare us to be the change others need. If you are not in the right place yourself, you might not be effective in helping others. But once God works in your life, let your worship be both personal and purposeful. And in that purpose, learn exactly what God wants you to do for Him. This is the best kind of worship you will ever experience!
