Overcoming Fear
"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
Fear is a powerful emotion, one that grips our hearts and minds, often leaving us paralyzed or anxious. In the movie Inside Out 2, fear is portrayed in a way many of us can relate to. It's an image of uncertainty and caution, always on alert for danger or the unexpected.
If you stop and think about it, fear often feels like it takes over when we focus on the things right in front of us, the things we can see. It’s different from anxiety, which tends to worry about what’s hidden or uncertain. Fear is what hits you when you’re faced with a situation, a challenge, or a decision that feels too big, too overwhelming, or even too dangerous.
But here’s the thing: God didn’t give us fear to control us. In fact, in 2 Timothy 1:7, Paul reminds us that God’s spirit within us isn’t a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and self-discipline. That’s a powerful truth when fear tries to creep in.
When you’re standing at the edge of something uncertain or intimidating, remember that the Spirit inside you isn’t timid or scared. You have been given a spirit of strength. You have the power to face what’s in front of you, no matter how big or how scary it might seem.
Just as Paul encouraged Timothy to rekindle the gift of God’s spirit, you too are called to stir up the courage that’s already in you. It’s easy to let fear define your actions, but when you recognize the spirit of power within you, you’ll find that fear loses its hold. You don’t have to run from fear or avoid it. With the Holy Spirit’s help, you can face it with confidence, knowing that God is with you.
The next time fear knocks at your door, don’t let it take control. Remember the power of the Spirit that lives inside you. Choose to stand firm in that power, trusting that you are equipped to handle whatever comes your way.
