Authenticity in the Church
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness." - Matthew 23:27-28
As followers of Christ, we are called to be authentic in our faith and obedient to who God has called us to be. Unfortunately, there are times when we fall short and become hypocritical in our actions and attitudes. We may present ourselves as righteous and holy on the outside, but on the inside, we are full of deceit and wickedness. This is not the type of behavior that should be present in the church.
Jesus himself called out the Pharisees and teachers of the law for their hypocritical behavior. They were concerned only with their outward appearance and did not prioritize the inner transformation that comes from a relationship with God. They were more concerned with pleasing others and elevating themselves in the eyes of the people than with truly following God.
As members of the church, we must strive to be authentic and true to who we are in Christ. We must prioritize our relationship with God over our desire for approval and recognition from others. We must seek to grow in our faith and allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out. Only then can we truly reflect the love and grace of God to those around us.
Let us not be like the hypocrites that Jesus spoke of in Matthew 23. Instead, let us be true to who we are in Christ and obedient to his call on our lives. Let us seek to grow in our faith and allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out. Only then can we truly be the authentic, loving, and grace-filled church that God desires us to be.
