You Don’t Have To Be A VIP
“‘My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,’ says the Lord. ‘And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.’” - Isaiah 55:8-9
There was a song sung by a husband-and-wife duo Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. in 1976 entitled, “You Don’t Have to be a Star to Be in My Show.” It was a hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard charts; and I believe it did so well because it spoke to the essence of unconditional love and acceptance.
They sang, “Baby come as you are with just your heart; and I’ll take you in; you’re rejected and hurt; to me you’re worth what you have within. Now I don’t need no superstar, ‘cause I’ll accept you as you are; you won’t be denied ‘cause I’m satisfied; with the love you inspire.” And the chorus goes: “You don’t have to be a star, baby, to be in my show.”
Jesus also wants us to come as we are—rejected, hurt, disappointed, fearful. We often believe that we are too sinful to come to God as we are. We believe that we must put on our most perfect facade to be accepted by people; and in turn, we carry this burden into our relationship with the Most High.
However, God created us in His image. And He is all-seeing, all-knowing, and all-present. So, we don’t have to have VIP status by the world’s standard in order to be accepted by Him, because in His kingdom we all are special and accepted.
Over the next week or so, we are going to look at stories of characters who might not be “stars” but played such important roles in the historical account of the Bible. We often talk about the big plans God has for our lives and that is most definitely true. But what role you are in depends on the plan God has for you and not anybody else.
Whatever role God decides to place you in is not by mistake. He is intentional in where He places each and every one of His children. God wants to bless us, but God also has His own way of doing so. You do not have to be the star of the show to make a huge impact for the Kingdom of God!
