A Supporting Role
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. – Ephesians 3:20-21
Sometimes God wants to do something in us, through us, and for us that’s greater than what we can see. When you study the dimensions and the materials in the temple that Solomon built, you discover that it was much larger and grander than the one that David had in mind based upon the available resources.
The reason people go on regular pilgrimages to the Holy Land now is in large part because of Solomon’s grand temple. David’s temple would not have been as awe-inspiring as Solomon’s. And God said “no” to David because God just wanted David to cast the vision, to plant the seed, to pave the way, but then God needed David to get out of the way for the next generation to accomplish something greater.
We so often think that we need to be leading the way in every little thing God is doing around us. But sometimes, God might want us playing a supporting role rather than a leading role as He works through His children to further His kingdom. We are all gifted differently. We are all at different stages of life and have completely different life stories and experiences. We all bring something unique to the table. And while in some instances, it might make the most sense for you to lead, in other circumstances, you might be able to best serve the Lord by supporting someone else as they lead.
There’s nothing “less than” about humbling yourself and serving God in whatever way He calls you to serve. Your only concern should be in being obedient to what the Lord is asking you to do. If David had disobeyed God and went ahead with building the temple, Solomon never would have had the chance to build the incredible temple we can still see today. So don’t stand in the way of someone else fulfilling their calling just because you want to take charge. Be humble. Be a servant. And be supportive.
