No One To Be Found
I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one. (Ezekiel 22:30)
In today’s key verse, the prophet Ezekiel is clearly stating a problem in regard to the High Priest. The problem, as cited by God, is that there was no one who could be found to fulfill the role. At this point in history, the High Priest had unique access into the place and presence of God. The priest was empowered to serve as a necessary go-between or a bridge between heaven and earth, between God and man, and between sanctity and sinfulness. This servant was given certain privileges as one chosen and selected by God for a specific purpose.
So you can see why it was such a big deal that there wasn’t anyone to step into this role. And the worst part was, it’s not that no one could fill the role, but that no one would fill it. They were able, but not willing. That’s a dangerous place to be for all of us as believers.
However, this is an easy place of complacency and selfishness to fall into. You know how it is, between work and taking care of your own needs, you don’t have time to intercede for others. But God is looking for someone willing to forsake personal comforts and conveniences so their family could be stronger, their community could be better, and their world could be safer. The prophet says that when we stand in the gap for the broken, we are also standing before God and with God. And standing with God is a privilege we should not take for granted.
So the next time you have the chance to intercede for someone, the next time God is calling you to take a step of obedience, don’t be like the people Ezekiel is talking about. Don’t be unwilling to fulfill the role God is leading you into. Instead, follow Him with reckless abandon, trusting that He will never lead you astray.
