Rebuilding Together
"Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for the good work." - Nehemiah 2:18
There comes a time when you have to stop looking at what was lost and start rebuilding. That is exactly where God’s people found themselves after 70 years in exile. Their homes were gone, their city was in ruins, and their temple had been destroyed. But instead of staying stuck in grief, they made a decision. They would not wallow in the devastation. They would start again.
The book of Nehemiah is a story of rebuilding, not just structures but faith, relationships, and identity. The people returned in waves, each group playing a role in the restoration process. Some rebuilt the temple. Others focused on restoring their spiritual foundation. The final wave rebuilt the walls that once protected them, symbolizing security, unity, and God’s covenant with His people.
Rebuilding is never easy. It takes work, perseverance, and most of all, unity. The people of God could not afford to work against each other. They had to work together toward a common goal, against a common enemy, for a common cause. That is the only way progress happens. If they had allowed divisions, personal agendas, or fear to take over, the walls would have never been restored.
Maybe you are in a season where you need to rebuild. You have been through devastation. You have suffered losses, attacks, or setbacks. And now, you are standing in the aftermath, wondering how to begin again. The good news is that you do not have to do it alone. God is calling you to rise up and build, but He is also surrounding you with people who can help.
Look around and ask yourself, are you working with those God has placed in your life, or are you allowing division and distraction to slow you down? Are you committed to the process, or are you hesitating to start? The walls of Jerusalem were built by people who refused to let their past define their future. If you want to rebuild what has been broken in your own life, you have to be willing to do the same.
It is time to put your hands to the work. It is time to stop looking at the ruins and start laying the foundation for something new. Strengthen your heart. Align yourself with others who are committed to the same goal. And trust that the same God who called His people to rebuild then is calling you to rebuild now.
