Giving Is About Gratitude
“And He said, ‘Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.’” - Luke 21:3
In today’s world, being a widow doesn’t carry the same weight it did in the time of Jesus. Women now have rights, opportunities, and the ability to provide for themselves. But in the context of this passage, widows were some of the most vulnerable members of society, often denied access to resources that could meet their basic needs. This is why the Bible frequently commands believers to care for widows in their distress.
When this poor widow gave her two small coins, she was making a powerful statement of gratitude and trust. Despite her lack of money, husband, and social standing, she recognized that God had always provided for her. Her offering wasn’t about the amount she gave, but about the faith she placed in God. It was a declaration that, even in her poverty, she still had a lot left—her faith, her trust in God’s provision, and her unwavering gratitude.
