Giving Is About Gratitude
“And He said, ‘Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.’” - Luke 21:3
In today’s world, being a widow doesn’t carry the same weight it did in the time of Jesus. Women now have rights, opportunities, and the ability to provide for themselves. But in the context of this passage, widows were some of the most vulnerable members of society, often denied access to resources that could meet their basic needs. This is why the Bible frequently commands believers to care for widows in their distress.
When this poor widow gave her two small coins, she was making a powerful statement of gratitude and trust. Despite her lack of money, husband, and social standing, she recognized that God had always provided for her. Her offering wasn’t about the amount she gave, but about the faith she placed in God. It was a declaration that, even in her poverty, she still had a lot left—her faith, her trust in God’s provision, and her unwavering gratitude.
You may have lost a lot in your life—a job, a loved one, your health, or even your peace of mind. Yet, in the midst of your loss, there is still something to be thankful for. The widow’s gift wasn’t about her financial contribution; it was about her heart. She wasn’t giving to be seen by others but to glorify God. Her giving was an act of worship, a testimony of God’s faithfulness in her life.
True giving comes from a place of gratitude, not abundance. It’s easy to give when you’re comfortable, but sacrificial giving requires faith. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and trusting that God will provide. This widow didn’t let her fixed income limit her faith in a limitless God. She believed that the same God who had provided for her in the past would continue to do so in the future.
Your giving is an expression of your faith and gratitude. It’s a declaration that God has been good to you, that He has opened doors and made a way. So, give not out of obligation but out of gratitude for all that God has done. Remember, your gift, no matter how small, is significant when it’s given from the heart. If God has done it before, He can do it again. Trust in His provision and keep giving with a thankful heart.
