Transforming the Heart
"And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh." —Ezekiel 36:26
In our walk with Christ, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that simply doing better—changing our outward behaviors—is the ultimate goal. However, true transformation starts within our hearts and radiates outward. God desires to transform our hearts, not just our actions, and this profound change begins by drawing closer to Him.
We’ve discussed how behavior modification alone is insufficient. We might stop one negative action, only to find another creeping in to take its place. This is because the root issues—our deep-seated wounds, unmet needs, and past traumas—remain unaddressed. True healing and transformation come not from our efforts to "do better," but from allowing God to work within us, changing our very hearts.
Ezekiel 36:26 reminds us of God’s promise to give us new hearts and spirits. This heart transformation is not something we can achieve on our own. It is a divine act, a gift from God that comes as we draw nearer to Him. When we seek God with all our hearts, we open ourselves up to His transformative power.
Jesus exemplifies the kind of heart God wants for us. A heart that loves unconditionally, forgives readily and serves selflessly. As we spend time in prayer, study His Word, and meditate on His life, we invite God to mold our hearts to be more like Jesus'. This heart transformation leads to genuine changes in our behavior—changes that are sustainable because they flow from a renewed spirit.
To draw closer to God and allow Him to transform your heart, begin and end your day with prayer, asking God to reveal areas in your heart that need healing. Be honest about your struggles and ask for His guidance and strength. Regularly reading and meditating on God's Word helps align our hearts with His will.
Remember, we cannot heal on our own by just trying to "do better." Our efforts, apart from God, are like placing a band-aid on a deep wound. True healing comes from God changing our hearts and transforming us into the image of Jesus. When our hearts are changed, our actions naturally follow.
