Let God Be Your Defense
"But I will declare forever, I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. All the horns of the wicked I will cut off, but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up." - Psalm 75:9-10
As the words of Psalms 75 unfold, there is a distinctive shift in language that calls for our attention. Initially, there's a universal call for praise in verse 1, a familiar theme in the Psalms. Yet, by the time we reach verse 2, the tone changes to an announcement of divine judgment. God Himself steps forward to speak on behalf of those who, in the preceding chapter, were unable to find closure.
In verse 2, the declaration resounds, God, in His perfect timing, will judge the arrogance of the wicked. This pronouncement carries a profound message for the people of Israel, a message that transcends time and resonates with us today. The call is clear: Do not fight fire with fire; do not seek revenge against those who have harmed you. Instead, be poised and disciplined enough to let God handle your enemies.
In the face of uncertainty, it's a common human instinct to take matters into our own hands. The desire for retaliation can be overwhelming during seasons of injustice or pain. Yet, the psalmist offers a counterintuitive wisdom—to respond with silence. Not a silence born of weakness, but a silence that signifies trust in the Lord to be our defense and vindication.
Silence becomes a powerful response when we let God be our defense. It doesn't imply passivity or surrender; rather, it reflects a conscious choice to allow God to fight on our behalf. It is an act of acknowledging that vengeance is not ours to claim, but belongs to the Lord.
So, when the urge to retaliate arises, when the desire for vindication consumes your thoughts, consider the profound strength found in silence. It's a silence that echoes the declaration in Psalm 75: "But I will declare forever, I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. All the horns of the wicked I will cut off, but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up."
In the realm of silence, God becomes our defender, cutting off the horns of the wicked and lifting up the righteous. May we find the courage to let God be our defense, trusting that in due time, He will bring justice and vindication, allowing our praises to resound forever.
