Believe It… Even When You Don’t See It
“A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it.” - Psalm 46:4-5
We’ve been talking the last few days about how to develop resilience. So today, I want to give you the last part of the recipe for resilience, and that is that you must believe it even when you don’t see it. The psalmist in Psalm 46 says something in the opening lines of verse four that would have directly grabbed the attention of the listeners in his day. He says “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God.”
The city of God to which the psalmist is speaking is Zion, which is in Jerusalem. The irony of the statement is that there is no river flowing through Jerusalem. What the psalmist is suggesting is that God has provision that we can’t see. But even though we can’t see it, we must trust that God is going to make a way.
That is really the essence of faith. Trust that God will make a way even when you don’t know how He will. Martin Luther King described it this way, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the staircase.”
In the world’s system, you see and then you believe. But in God’s economy, you believe and then you see. In other words, faith is believing you already have what you have been hoping for even when you have no proof that you have it. This is the key to a resilient life. It is the awareness that where you are today is not where you will be tomorrow.
You may not see it now, but if you remain resilient, in due time, you will. I pray you will choose to believe it even when you don’t see it!
