Guard the Driver’s Seat
"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me." – John 14:1
Jesus spoke the words in the verse above to His disciples during one of their darkest moments. He knew fear was rising in their hearts. He knew their minds were racing with questions and worst-case scenarios. And yet, His message was simple and direct. “Let not your hearts be troubled.” Not because there would be no trouble around them, but because they still had control over what took root inside them.
He was saying, “Don’t let what you’re facing contaminate your heart.” That’s a strong warning, and it matters for us today. You can go through pain and not be poisoned by it. You can face heartbreak, rejection, fear, and failure, and still keep your heart clear and steady. But only if you’re intentional about guarding it.
What’s been trying to drive your heart lately? Is it guilt from something you did long ago that still whispers shame into your soul? Is it the fact that you grew up without a father and you carry that emptiness everywhere you go? Maybe it’s the loneliness of being single while everyone else seems to be settling down. Or maybe you were hurt by someone deeply and you’ve never let yourself love again. The details may differ, but the struggle is the same. Something is trying to take over the driver's seat of your heart.
Jesus knows exactly what has tried to sit behind the wheel in your life. That’s why He speaks to the heart. He knows that once fear gets in the driver’s seat, faith gets pushed to the side. Once disappointment grabs the wheel, hope starts to fade. Once pain steers your choices, joy becomes a distant memory.
But you do not have to be driven by what has happened to you. You do not have to be directed by what you feel right now. You can give that seat to the One who speaks peace into storms and strength into weakness. You can choose to believe Him.
Jesus said it then, and He says it now. Let not your heart be troubled. Give Him control and let Him lead you forward.
