What’s Going on Inside
"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me." – John 14:1
When Jesus spoke of the heart, He was not talking about the physical organ that pumps blood. The word He used, kardia, meant much more than that. It was the place where thoughts form, decisions are made, emotions are stirred, and direction is chosen. It was the control center of a person’s life. In other words, when your heart is troubled, your whole life feels off balance.
Jesus knew what His disciples were about to face. They were going to watch Him suffer and die. They would be afraid, scattered, confused, and overwhelmed. Their world would be turned upside down. But even knowing all that, Jesus looked at them and said, “Let not your hearts be troubled.” He was not ignoring the pain that was coming. He was teaching them how to face it without letting it take over.
A troubled heart is more than a bad mood. It is a deep, inner unrest that stirs worry, fear, and discouragement. And the danger is not just what happens to us on the outside, but what starts happening on the inside. That’s why Jesus didn’t tell them to change their situation. He told them to guard their hearts. Protect the center. Strengthen the foundation. Believe in God. Believe in Me.
We often carry our stress, our anxiety, our pain, and our trauma in silence. We try to manage it ourselves. We distract ourselves, numb ourselves, or bury it. But eventually, the heart starts to feel the weight. We get short-tempered. We feel exhausted all the time. We lose clarity and courage. And Jesus says, “Don’t let it get that far.”
He wasn’t asking them to pretend nothing was wrong. He was showing them how to keep their inner life steady even when their outer life got shaken. Believe. Trust. Rest in Me. That’s what Jesus said.
Whatever it is you’re facing right now, do not let it sit and stir in your heart unattended. Do not carry it alone. Jesus is offering peace. Not a peace that takes away every problem, but a peace that guards your heart in the middle of it. Trust Him with what’s happening outside, and let Him bring calm to what’s going on inside.
