It Can Be Anything
“’Yet even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.’” - Joel 2:12
Fasting. It is something we have spent the last couple of days talking about. Fasting is a great tool to gain clarity from God. It is something Elijah did while waiting for God to light the fire at the altar and then send the rain at Mt. Carmel. And it is something we should do as well.
Traditionally, fasting has been giving up food and drink for a certain period of time. There are many people who are unable to do that form of fast and some who get automatically turned off because they believe it is impossible for them. And while this is an important type of fast, it is not the only type of fast.
The goal of fasting is to give up something that has become a vice in your life. Think about the thing(s) in your life that you may place before spending time with God. Think about those things that you are doing when you remind yourself that you should be praying to and praising God.
It could be social media or watching tv. It could be some form of an addiction or even procrastination. Only you know what that is.
God wants to free you from that thing that you have told yourself you need or can’t live without. Joel 2:12 tells us, “’Yet even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.’”
What do you need to fast from? Turn your attention from the thing you think you need to the One you actually need. God is ready and waiting!
