Recognizing My Weakness
“You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” - Matthew 7:5
Over the next four days, we are going to go in greater depth on how we can eliminate a weakness, or even turn weakness into a strength. We all are going to have Achilles heels. But that does not mean we have an excuse not to work on them and learn to use them in the ways God intends.
God does not expect us to be perfect, as no man or woman is. For some, He might allow your Achilles heel to linger, as He plans to use it for a purpose later on. For others, He wants to walk with you on a journey of turning that weakness into a strength, for His glory. The first step on that journey, is recognizing your weakness. This might seem obvious, but for many it is not.
In today’s world, where everything is documented on social media, it is very easy to point out the flaws, struggles, and weaknesses in others. Yet ours could be starring us in the face and somehow we do not see it. Matthew talks about this in his gospel. He says, “You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
According to Matthew, you are a hypocrite when you can see the weakness in your brother’s life but not your own. What he is saying here is that we have plenty to fix ourselves before we go fixing others. It can be easy to assess the lives of others. But what about you?
When is the last time you looked in the mirror and confronted your weaknesses? When is the last time you talked to God about your struggles? Could you even name your struggles? If not, find the people closest to you and ask them to be brutally honest with you. Do not get mad at their answers, take it as the help you need to recognizing your weakness. You can also ask God to reveal them to you. Do not hide from your weaknesses. Find them and seek them out so that you can know exactly what you need to work on!
