When God Takes His Time
“But Abram said, ‘Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus? You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.’ Then the word of the Lord came to him: ‘This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.’ He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them, so shall your offspring be.” - Genesis 15:2-4
We live in a “right now” generation. We want everything instant: our food, our news, and our blessings. Because we are used to getting things instantly, it can be difficult when God shows us that we must wait. The wait can even blur our vision, causing us to wonder whether God is going to do what He said. That’s the kind of frustration that plagued Abram.
For approximately 10 years, Abram followed an unseen hand, listened to an inaudible voice, and traveled to an undisclosed destination that no one had seen. Along the way, he encountered challenge after challenge, difficulty after difficulty, situation after situation, and failure after failure. He gets to a point where he wonders, “Am I going to make it? Will I possess the land God promised? Will Sarai and I have the son God promised? Will I be blessed the way God said I would?
Maybe you find yourself asking these same questions as Abram did. If so, you are not alone. All believers have experienced, are experiencing, or will experience a time when it feels like God is silent or not listening. But remember, God’s time is not our time—He works in his own time, and He is always on time!
