A Communal Mindset
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)
Over the past couple of days, we’ve talked through what it looks like to be courageous and committed in following Christ and His call on our lives. I want to wrap up this topic today and discuss with you the importance of having a COMMUNAL MINDSET when it comes to serving the Lord and fulfilling His purpose for you.
The call that Isaiah answered was a call to community. At the time, Israel and Judah were two parts of a divided nation, but God sent the prophet with a word to remind them of their common unity. Note the plural pronoun “us” in verse 8: “Whom shall I send? And who will go for US?” Yes, who will go for “us? —not for self, not for me, myself, and I, but for “us.”
God would do the sending, but the sent ones would do the work for “us.” The power of the question God poses here is based on the fact that it challenges our self-centered priorities. Many of us are willing and ready to go, but only want to achieve our own goals and to make a name for ourselves. But the Lord asks the prophet to think broader than that. He wants us to go for the betterment of our community.
Community with other believers is a gift, one that we shouldn’t take for granted. So as we continue to pursue the Lord and His call on our lives, let us link up with our brothers and sisters in Christ so that we may do more for the kingdom together than we could ever do on our own.
