The Art Of Not Caring
God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob – has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.” (Exodus 3:15)
As Christians, we need to learn the art of not caring. Now, by “not caring,” I’m not talking about not having concern or regard for those who are less fortunate or who have fallen on hard times. We should have compassion towards those people. Instead, I’m talking about a holy refusal to allow anything unrelated to your destiny to hinder your destiny. That means haters, criticisms, judgments, perceptions, your past, failures. Anything that has no bearing on who you are, what God is doing in your life, and where God is trying to take you ultimately should not affect you or keep you from doing what God wants you to do.
Exodus 3:15 says, “God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob – has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.” Here the Bible gives us God’s name and title and relates them to three patriarchs in the history of Israel – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
That last reference is particularly intriguing, because Jacob has a stained background and history. He was not perfect, or anywhere close for that matter. He may have been a patriarch of Israel, but he had some issues. And if you had to choose someone to include in the name and title of God, you probably would not choose Jacob. However, God did choose Jacob.
God didn’t let the realities of Jacob’s past mistakes and struggles to dictate his standing with Him. He didn’t care what other people thought or what the perceptions or preconceived notions about Jacob were. He still used Jacob as a picture of imperfection to be an example to all of us who are imperfect as well.
What if we followed that same thought pattern? What if we cared more about what God thought of us than what other people thought of us? Just imagine what a difference that would make in the way we live our lives.
