Freedom in Christ
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - John 8:32
Oftentimes, people may believe that religion creates bondage and that it only holds a laundry list of things you cannot do. However, Christianity, in particular, is a vehicle for understanding Christ and the freedom that comes with salvation.
In John 8:32, Jesus speaks to the Jews saying, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They retort that they are the offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved, therefore they do not need to be “set free.”
Jesus was not talking about a physical bondage. He was referring to a spiritual bondage, their enslavement to sin. To know Jesus is to know truth because he is the truth, as highlighted in John 14:6. To accept salvation and follow Christ is to have freedom from the bondage of sin.
Does this mean that we will not sin? No. But salvation provides us forgiveness when we sin. Our walk with God does not have to be a rigid set of rules we follow to feel holy. We do not worship legalism, we worship God.
We have freedom from the law and freedom from eternal death in our sins. We have freedom from the judgment of others. We also have freedom for joy and holiness. We have freedom to love others and live the life God has called us to live. And there is no greater freedom then when one has grace and mercy, and the protection of eternal life in Christ.
Don’t let society convince you that living for Christ is enslavement. It is true freedom, and you will receive an eternal reward for your faithfulness!
