How to Deal with a Troubled Heart
"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me." – John 14:1
Jesus spoke the words we see in John 14:1 to His disciples at a time when their world was about to get shaken. He was preparing them for His departure, and they didn’t understand. Their hearts were heavy with fear, uncertainty, and confusion. And in that moment, He didn’t give them a five-step plan. He gave them a person to trust. Himself.
We all know what it’s like to feel that weight in our chest. Maybe it’s grief that won’t let go. Maybe it’s anxiety about the future or regret about the past. Maybe it’s the kind of heartbreak you can’t even explain to other people. But here’s the truth Jesus teaches: just because your heart is hurting doesn’t mean it has to stay troubled. You have the power to shift the burden, but you’ve got to shift your belief. “Believe in God, believe also in me,” He said.
Trouble can cloud your vision. It can make it hard to see any way forward. But the more you feed your fear, the more it will grow. Jesus offers another way. He invites you to believe. Not in the outcome, not in the solution, but in Him. That kind of belief isn’t passive. It’s active trust. It’s waking up each day and saying, “I don’t feel steady, but I know the One who holds steady.” It’s putting more weight on His Word than on your worry.
The disciples didn’t know what was ahead, but Jesus did. And the same is true for you. He already sees what you can’t. He knows what’s around the corner. You’re not walking blind when you walk by faith. You’re walking with the One who sees everything and holds it all in His hands.
Your heart might be hurting, but it doesn’t have to stay stuck. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled.” In other words, you have a choice. You don’t have to be ruled by fear. You don’t have to let the pain take over. Believe in the One who already overcame the world. Believe in the One who can carry what you cannot.
