Avoiding Spiritual Malpractice
"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." - Matthew 5:44
Malpractice usually makes us think of doctors or lawyers who fail to do their job properly and end up hurting someone. But there’s another kind of malpractice we often overlook, spiritual malpractice. It happens when people mishandle the Word of God in ways that cause harm instead of bringing life.
In Matthew 5, Jesus speaks directly to this issue. He addresses how people had been using Scripture to justify anger, mistreatment, and division. Instead of using God’s Word to heal and guide, they were using it to tear others down. Jesus was showing His followers, and us, that we need to handle Scripture with care.
What does that mean for you today? It means remembering that context matters. When you read or hear Scripture, you need to understand what it really says and what it really means. It is easy to pull one verse out of context and use it to defend a harsh opinion or judgment. But Jesus challenges us to go deeper. He calls us to interpret Scripture in a way that brings life, love, and truth.
Have you ever seen someone use a Bible verse to shame another person or to win an argument without truly reflecting the heart of God? That is the kind of misuse Jesus warns against. Biblical malpractice happens when we twist God’s words to fit our own opinions or when we apply Scripture to others without first applying it to our own hearts.
The heart of Jesus was always centered on love, compassion, and restoration. His goal was never to beat people down with truth but to lift them up into truth. As followers of Jesus, we are called to handle His Word with the same care.
Instead of using Scripture to win debates or prove a point, let it shape you into someone who reflects the love of Christ. Let it transform you so that when you speak, people hear grace, truth, and wisdom flowing together. That is how we live out God’s Word with integrity and bring life to those around us.
