The Heart of Giving
“He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury; and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.” - Luke 21:1-2
There was a time when giving was a public affair, without the anonymity of paper currency or online transactions. Back then, offerings were visible, and the sound of coins in a wooden plate revealed the giver’s generosity. It was an era where who gave and how much was often on display, leading to an environment where some might give to be seen while others felt diminished by their lack of resources.
In this context, Jesus observed the rich people making their contributions to the temple treasury and noted a poor widow who gave two small coins. The contrast between these givers was stark, and Jesus pointed out a crucial lesson: it’s not about the amount you give but the heart behind the gift.
Jesus was watching, not to judge the value of the offerings, but to highlight the sincerity of the giver's heart. The rich could afford to give more, and their offerings were often given with an eye toward recognition. The widow, however, gave all she had, not for show, but out of deep trust and devotion. Her offering was small in amount but immense in significance because it came from a place of genuine sacrifice.
This moment reminds us that God values the heart behind the giving more than the quantity. Whether your contributions are large or small, what matters most is the sincerity and selflessness with which you give. It’s easy to be swayed by the desire for recognition or to feel discouraged if your resources are limited. But remember, Jesus sees beyond the external display and looks directly at the heart.
As you consider your own giving, focus on the spirit of generosity that aligns with God’s desires. Giving should be an act of worship and a reflection of your trust in Him. It’s not about competing or comparing but about offering what you have with a grateful heart. Let your generosity be a true expression of your faith, and trust that God honors the heart that gives wholeheartedly, regardless of the amount.
