No More Tears
Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her. - Genesis 23:1-2
When you read Genesis 23, you arrive at an occasion of a very sad, but inevitable rite of passage that we all will eventually face. Here we learn of the death and departure of Abraham’s lifelong partner, Sarah. We learn of her age at the time of her transition, and of the sorrow Abraham must have felt that is common when you lose someone you love.
What is interesting is that there are actually more words combined here in these few lines concerning Sarah than are found in the entire faith narrative of our patriarch, Abraham. More is said about Sarah in death than is said in life, which we can take to understand the importance of death and how to handle the grief that comes with it.
The truth is that there is an expiration date associated with our time here on earth, and none of us can escape it. It does not matter who you are, how much you have, or how important you consider yourself to be. Death is a part of life, and it reminds us all of our own mortality.
And whenever one is faced with the reality of death, quite naturally, grief will inevitably ensue. This is a completely natural expression of emotion upon losing someone you held dearly. But if they are a believer, this is not the last time you will see them.
Not only is it not the last time you will be acquainted with them, but death itself will one day cease to exist. Revelation 21:4 tells us, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
Though it is something we will inevitably face here on earth, there will be a day when we never again experience tears, pain, or death. Praise be to King Jesus who overcame death for us all so that we can spend eternity together worshipping Him!
