The Persistent Widow
"And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?" - Luke 18:7
The parable of the persistent widow teaches us about , but it also teaches us about justice advocacy. The widow in Jesus' story refused to give up in her pursuit of justice, even when facing an indifferent judge who cared nothing for God or people. Her persistence eventually wore down his resistance and secured the justice she deserved.
This widow represents everyone who has been denied justice by systems designed to favor the powerful. She's the tenant fighting an unscrupulous landlord. The worker pursuing unpaid wages. The patient battling insurance companies for coverage. The community organizing against environmental racism. Like the widow, they must persist in demanding what is rightfully theirs.
Jesus contrasts the unjust judge with God, who delights in justice and responds to the cries of the oppressed. But the parable also suggests that God often works through persistent human advocates who refuse to accept injustice as inevitable. We become God's answer to the s for justice when we join our voices to the persistent cry for change.
The widow's persistence wasn't just about her individual case—it was about establishing precedent and creating change that would benefit others facing similar injustices. When we persist in advocating for justice, we're not just helping ourselves or even specific individuals; we're working to transform systems for everyone.
Persistence in justice work requires both faith and strategy. We must believe that change is possible while also organizing effectively to make it happen. The widow's example shows us that individual persistence, combined with divine justice, can overcome even the most resistant systems.
Persistent advocacy for justice is both and action. When we refuse to accept injustice, we participate in God's work of bringing about righteousness on earth.
Identify an injustice that requires persistent advocacy. Commit to staying engaged with this issue for the long haul, whether through sustained , repeated contact with officials, or ongoing support for affected communities.
Your persistence in pursuing justice reflects God's own heart for righteousness. Don't give up—your advocacy matters more than you know.
God of justice, give us the persistence of the widow who refused to give up. Help us continue advocating for righteousness even when change seems slow. Make us instruments of Your justice in the world. Amen.
