Taking His Sweet Time
“But Abram said, ‘Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?’ And Abram said, ‘You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.’” - Genesis 15:2-3
Let’s face it, no one likes having to wait. But when it comes to your relationship with God, sometimes we must wait for Him to do what only He can do. God will require us to wait for many reasons, but the reasons do not make it easier. This is the dilemma that faced Abram in Genesis 15.
He has a promise from God, and it seems as if God is taking His sweet time. This is the point where many people never realize their dream or experience what God has for them because the passage of time causes them to give up on God. We live in a right now generation. We live in a microwave, Instagram generation. News travels fast. And so, if God has something for us, we want Him to do it right now.
But the time and circumstances we have to endure blur our vision causing us to wonder whether God is going to do what He said. That is the kind of frustration that was “messing with Abram” as chapter 15 of the book of Genesis begins. For approximately 10 years now, Abram has been following an unseen hand, listening to an inaudible voice, and traveling to an undisclosed destination that no one, at least no one that he knew, had seen.
And along the way, he has encountered challenge after challenge, difficulty after difficulty, situation after situation, even negotiating failure after failure; now all of a sudden in the preceding chapter, he finds himself in a life-threatening fight for his life. And it seems like he’s at a point where he wonders, “Am I going to make it? Will I possess the land God promised? Will Sarai and I have the son God promised? And will I be blessed the way God said I would be?”
Perhaps you are asking the same thing, “God will I be blessed the way you said I would be? Will You do what You said You will do?” The good news is, He will. Whatever God says He will do, will happen. You just have to wait on Him, even when it seems like He is taking His sweet time.
