Abundance Over Scarcity
You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's. (Exodus 20:17)
Jealousy is so powerful that it can corrupt the truth in the mouth of the believer. So when the believer speaks out of jealousy, the power and effect of the word of God is muted by the presence of that jealousy and envy in their heart.
It's difficult to confidently speak about the goodness of God when you are jealous of God’s blessings towards other people. It's difficult to truly believe that God is faithful when you experience jealousy over God’s faithfulness in the lives of your neighbors. Jealousy in the believer operates from the perspective of scarcity and insufficiency.
The jealous person doesn’t believe that God can supply all their needs and their neighbor’s needs too. They do not believe that God has enough blessing for them and their neighbor at the same time. Jealousy implies that the blessings of God are like a pie, and if God gives your neighbor a slice of the pie, then that’s one less slice available for you. But let me tell you, that is a lie! The pie is a lie.
It’s that kind of thinking, lodged in the heart of the believer, that corrupts the truth of the Gospel that we are called upon to share. Instead, we must hold tightly to God’s truth and believe that He is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we could ever ask, think or imagine, according to the power that works on the inside. We must believe that nothing is too hard for God. And we must believe that we do not serve a God of scarcity, but a God of abundance. If He can bless your neighbor, He can bless you as well.
