Change Locations
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” – Genesis 12:1
The question presented by the text is not whether God was going to bless Abram. God had already promised him that He would do that. The question is whether Abram was willing to go through and endure the process of faith required to fulfill God’s will.
Abram would have to pack his suitcase and his belongings and just go to the place where God would guide him. It would be an unfamiliar place, it would be an uncertain place, it would even be an uncomfortable place, and yet it would be the very place where God wanted Abram to be.
Quite often we miss our season and our assignment in life because while we claim to want the blessings of God, we don’t want to be inconvenienced in the process. We want raises and promotions on our jobs, but we don’t want the extra responsibilities that are required. We want financial blessings, but we don’t want to make the financial sacrifices of living on a budget and saving for the future. We say we want good health, but we don’t want to exercise and eat right. We say we want a closer relationship with God, but we don’t spend time in the Word, don’t want to give to God or serve, and only pray when we feel like it.
In order to get to the place of blessing, Abram has to separate himself. He had to change his address, his associations, and his perspective in order to be and become the patriarch of the Hebrew people. Too many of us ask God to bless us, but we want to stay where we are. The text says that sometimes you have to change your location if you want to go to a new destination.
Abram has to remove himself from familiar places, from familiar people, and he has to be willing to endure a season all by himself. Abram has to leave his familiar surroundings so that God can expose him to a different way of thinking, to a new way of doing things, and to rely on a different source. It is in that season when Abram is confronted with struggles, and unexpected circumstances, but in the end the promise is worth the process. That was true for Abram, and it is true for you as well.
