Beyond the Church Walls
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. (Psalm 139:7-10)
In light of the public health crisis facing our nation and our world, many of us cannot gather within our church’s sanctuary to pray, praise, and worship God. As a result, many people are wondering when they’re going to be able to sing again, to preach from the pulpit again, and to see their family of believers again.
While I understand their eagerness to come back to church, Scripture teaches us that we don’t have to be in church to experience God’s presence. We cannot become so consumed with the matter of worship in the sanctuary that we miss the mandate to create a sanctuary for the world.
We must never forget that wherever God’s people are, there is a chance to experience God’s power, whether you’re in a church building or outside of it. God’s power doesn’t just move on Sunday when the church doors are open. God’s power moves Sunday through Saturday, wherever God’s people are.
God will move in the grocery store, in the car wash, while you’re at work, or anywhere else for that matter. That’s what is so awesome about God—He is omnipresent. He is everywhere, with every person, at the same time.
While it is an absolutely wonderful thing to be able to worship and fellowship with our family believers at church on Sunday, I hope that you remember that the power of God is not confined to what God does in the building 2 hours a week. It also extends to the other 166 hours of the week as well. So don’t get discouraged that the church doors aren’t opened. Trust that God is still moving and still working beyond those walls.
