Fellowship Within the Church
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:46-47)
I’m sure you’ve probably heard about the Redwood trees that line the coastline of California. They are some of the largest living organisms in the world. They can grow as much as 300 feet high and have a circumference of 40 feet around. Some of them have been there for over 250 years.
The reason these trees are so massive is because they grow in groves, and their roots are intertwined underneath the ground. If they did not grow together in groves, and if their roots were not intertwined, they would not grow to be as tall and as strong as they are. No connectedness, no growth.
In a lot of ways, the body of Christ works the same way. We need fellowship and connection with each other if we want to experience growth in our faith.
Church fellowship takes place when we can make deposits in one another, when we are able to commune empathically with one another, and develop meaningful partnerships with one another. That’s what true Christian fellowship looks like; and we need more of that today, especially when trying to worship during a pandemic.
People, now more than ever, are longing for connection and bonding. And my hope for the Church is that as we move forward, we will not lose the sense that we need one another. So let’s do our best, even under difficult circumstances, to continue to value fellowship with other believers. Let’s find ways to connect so that we may grow in our faith and honor our Heavenly Father as we strive to strengthen the body of Christ.
