The Discipline Of Generosity
"The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." - 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
Generosity is one of the most countercultural things a person can practice, because everything around us is teaching the opposite lesson all day long.
The world teaches scarcity. Hold on. Protect what you have. Somebody is coming for it. More is always better and enough is never a number you actually reach. That message arrives through advertising, through the news, through the anxious voice in your own head at two in the morning doing math about next month.
The gospel teaches something different. What you release, God multiplies. What you clench, you slowly lose, and usually you lose more than money.
Now, be careful here, because this verse gets misused constantly. Paul is not describing a transaction. He is not saying give a hundred dollars and God owes you a thousand. God is not a vending machine, and faith is not an investment strategy. Anyone who preaches it that way is selling something Scripture does not sell.
Paul is describing a posture of the heart. The cheerful giver is not someone with extra. The cheerful giver is someone who has been so undone by God's generosity toward them that giving has become a natural expression of who they are. It is not reluctant. It is not calculated down to the penny. It flows.
Notice the phrase "as you have made up your mind." Generosity in this passage is decided, not squeezed. It is something you think about in advance, not something you get guilted into on a Sunday when the pressure builds.
And generosity has a justice dimension that the church often skips. There is a difference between handing someone a meal and asking why the pantry in that neighborhood is empty in the first place. Both matter. Charity meets the need in front of us. Reform asks why the need keeps being manufactured.
So when we give to organizations fighting for equity, when we support the economic flourishing of communities that have been systematically locked out, when we advocate for policies that make sure everybody has enough, we are practicing a generosity that goes past charity. We are working toward a world where cheerful giving is not only a private virtue but a public reality.
Review your giving this month with real honesty. Is it cheerful or is it reluctant? Then choose one new way to give this week, whether it is money, time, or your voice in a room where a decision is being made.
You already have something somebody needs. Open your hand and watch what God does with it!
Prayer:
Generous God, everything we have came from you first. Loosen our grip and make us cheerful, open-handed people who reflect your abundance. Teach us to give in ways that heal and not only in ways that comfort us. Amen.
