Hearing And Doing
"But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves." - James 1:22
There is a kind of self-deception that feels exactly like faithfulness.
You read the passage. You nod. Something stirs in your chest. You feel genuinely moved. And then you close the app, pour the coffee, and move through the rest of your day precisely as you would have if you had never opened it at all.
James calls that self-deception. That is a sharp word for a subtle trap, and he chose it on purpose.
A few verses later he gives us the picture. A person looks in a mirror, sees exactly what needs attention, turns away, and immediately forgets what they saw. The mirror did its job. The light was good. The reflection was accurate. The problem was the walking away.
Notice how gentle the picture is. James does not call the person in the mirror wicked. He says they forgot. That is most of us on most days, not rebellious, just distracted, carried off by the next thing before the first thing could take hold.
That is what hearing without doing looks like. The information arrives. The conviction stirs. And then nothing shifts.
Now hear me clearly, because this is where people get it wrong. Doing the Word is not how you earn God's love. You cannot earn what has already been given. Doing the Word is about integrity, which simply means that what you say you believe and how you actually live are the same thing.
If you believe God loves the poor, your calendar should show some evidence. If you believe justice matters to God, your choices should carry a trace of it. If you believe every person bears God's image, the way you speak about people who are not in the room should prove it.
You might be saying, "Pastor, I have tried this before and I did not last a week." Most of us have. But the answer to a broken pattern is not shame. The answer is a smaller, truer step, taken again tomorrow. God is not keeping a record of your failed starts. He is walking with you on this one.
The Word was never meant to be stored. It was meant to be lived.
Pick one verse from this week that unsettled you. Write it on something you will see every day. Then each evening, ask yourself one question: how did I live this today?
You are not behind. You are just getting started!
Prayer:
Lord, make us doers and not just hearers. Let your Word take root in us deeply enough to change how we live and how we love. Keep us honest with ourselves. Amen.
