Starting Where You Are
"Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much." - Luke 16:10
The most common reason people never act on their faith is not disbelief. It is the quiet conviction that their contribution is too small to matter.
The problems are enormous. The systems are old and entrenched. The need is bottomless. And so we look at what we have, decide it is not enough to change anything, and do nothing at all. That is how good people end up on the sidelines for decades.
Jesus answers that reasoning, but not the way we expect. He does not hand out a strategy. He gives a principle: whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much.
Read that slowly, because it reverses the way we think about growth. We assume significance comes first and faithfulness follows. Jesus says faithfulness comes first, and it is the very thing that makes us capable of more.
There is real freedom in that. It means you do not have to wait for influence before you begin. Influence, if it ever comes, grows out of the faithfulness. And if it never comes, the faithfulness was the point all along.
So you do not have to fix everything. You have to be faithful where you are, with what you have, right now.
The woman who shows up consistently for one struggling neighbor is doing kingdom work. The man who gives generously out of a modest paycheck is doing kingdom work. The person who speaks up in a small room where a joke crossed a line and nobody else said anything is doing kingdom work. The scale is small. The impact is not.
This is deeply encouraging news for anyone worn down by the gap between the world as it is and the world as it should be. You were never asked to close that gap by yourself. You close it one faithful act at a time, alongside a community of people doing exactly the same thing in a thousand places you will never see.
That is how every movement that ever mattered actually moved. Not one hero with a plan. Thousands of ordinary people being faithful in a very little, at the same time, in the same direction.
Name one small, specific, faithful act you can commit to this week. Not a grand gesture. One steady, honest step you can actually take by Saturday.
God has never needed much to do much. He just needs you to start!
Prayer:
God, help us stop waiting for the perfect moment and the perfect plan. Show us the small, faithful thing that is right in front of us, and give us the humility to do it well. Use what little we have. Amen.
