Rest And Remember
"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28
The work of justice is real work, and it will wear you out if you let it.
You push against something that does not move. You show up for a person who is not ready. You give a year to a cause and watch it lose by four votes. Anyone who has done this honestly knows the particular tiredness that follows, the kind that sleep does not touch.
Today is not a day for pushing. Today is a day for coming.
Notice who Jesus invites. Not the rested. Not the successful. He calls the weary and the ones carrying heavy burdens. The invitation is addressed to exactly the people who feel least qualified to accept it, which is to say, it is addressed to you on your hardest week.
And notice what he offers. He does not say, "Come to me and I will give you a better strategy." He says, "I will give you rest." The verb belongs to him. Rest is not one more thing you have to produce.
The same Jesus who stood in Nazareth and announced good news to the poor is the Jesus who pulled his disciples away from the crowds so they could eat and pray and breathe. Those two moments are not in tension. They are the same life. He commissioned them, and then he sustained them, because he never intended for them to run on empty.
You cannot pour from a vessel nobody is filling. A tired body and a tired soul make poor instruments of compassion, and burnout has emptied more good work than opposition ever did.
Elijah learned this the hard way. After the greatest victory of his ministry he collapsed under a tree and asked God to take his life. God's first response was not a rebuke and it was not a new assignment. It was food and sleep, twice, before a single word of instruction.
So worship today is not an escape from the work. It is the fuel for it. When you remember who God is, what God has done, and what God has promised, something in you steadies. Courage returns. Perspective returns. You remember that the outcome was never resting on your shoulders alone.
Take honest rest today. Put the phone down, close the laptop, and let one hour be unproductive on purpose. Then write down one thing God did this week, however small, that you want to carry into the next one.
Small things matter. They are usually where the kingdom begins!
Prayer:
Lord, we come to you weary and grateful at the same time. Thank you for calling us into this work, and thank you for carrying what we cannot. Restore us today so we can keep going tomorrow. Amen.
