The Last Shall Be First
"But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first." - Matthew 19:30
A wealthy young man had just walked away from Jesus. He was sincere. He was moral. He had kept the commandments since childhood. And when Jesus named the one thing standing between him and freedom, his possessions, he could not do it. He went away grieving.
The disciples were shaken. If someone with that much going for him could not get in, who could? They had been taught all their lives that wealth was evidence of God's favor. Jesus had just turned that assumption upside down.
Then he told them a story. A landowner hires workers at dawn and agrees on a fair wage. He hires more at noon. He hires the last ones an hour before quitting time. And when the day ends, everybody gets paid the same.
The dawn crew is furious. They did the math, and the math is not on their side. But the landowner's answer exposes the whole thing: are you angry because I am unfair, or because I am generous?
That is the kingdom. It does not run on the world's economy. In the world's economy, the first stay first, the powerful gather more power, and the wealthy build higher walls around what they already have. In God's economy, the people the system pushed to the edges are the ones God moves to the center.
Understand what Jesus is not saying. He is not romanticizing poverty. Scripture never treats hunger as holy or calls suffering beautiful. He is saying that our arrangements are often inverted from God's values, and that following him means helping to turn them right side up.
That is why fair wages are a spiritual issue. That is why access to healthcare and education is a spiritual issue. Not because a political party says so, but because the kingdom of God says so, and Jesus said the last would be first before any of us had an opinion about it.
You might be saying, "Pastor, I did not build these systems." You are right. But you do live inside them, and so do the people they are failing. Naming that is not guilt. It is honesty, and honesty is where change starts.
Identify one system you move through regularly, your job, your school, your bank, your city. Ask God to show you one person that system consistently overlooks, and pay attention to them this week.
God is still rearranging the order of things, and he is not finished yet!
Prayer:
Jesus, help us see the world through your eyes, where the last are first and the forgotten are found. Give us courage to work for a world that looks like your kingdom. Start that work in us. Amen.
