How Much More?
“They answered, ‘Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?” – John 6:30
Regardless of where you find yourself in life, if you are able to present your faith passport, your spiritual credentials in Christ, you will be able to gain access to privileges that you would otherwise not be able to obtain.
This is why the first of the seven “I Am” statements of Jesus found in the Gospel of John is so interesting. It not only helps us understand Jesus’ person, purpose, and character, but it also models for us who we are and how we ought to function and live in the world as believers.
The statement, “I am the bread of life,” is uttered in response to a request from the crowds who watched him minister and were still a bit undecided about His purpose and power. They said in verse 30, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?”
Now the reason this is so interesting is that Jesus has just performed a range of signs in His gospel. In John 2, He turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana of Galilee. In John 4, He encountered and blessed the woman at Jacob’s well, and He healed the Roman official’s son. There are countless examples of the acts Jesus had done, and yet they are asking for another sign.
With all that was on Jesus’ resume, the crowd still seems unconvinced and wants Jesus to do more. But what stands out is that rather than caving into their demands, Jesus does not perform another sign. He does not give them the miracle they claim they need to substantiate who He is.
Now, you might be reading this thinking, “How much more evidence do they need?” He has already proven Himself to them time and time again. Now turn it around and ask yourself that. How much more evidence do you need?
How much does He have to do to prove you should obey Him? You say, “God if you will just do this, then I’ll stop this bad habit...” “God if you will give me one more sign, then I’ll break up with him.” You keep asking... one more, one more. But just know, He has already given you all you need.
