What Are You Drunk On?
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:18-20)
This world has so much to offer when it comes to bringing us fulfillment, happiness, relief, peace, and comfort. However, there is nothing the world can give us that will fully and eternally satisfy us.
As followers of Christ, we must learn not to be overindulgent in that which brings temporary satisfaction, but rather to be filled with the Spirit. It is the Spirit that helps temper our desires so that our wants do not become overdependent on the external realities of life.
There are a whole host of behaviors Christians can become drunk with. Some people are drunk with power and ego, while others are drunk with credit cards, substances, sex, or laziness. But instead of being filled with these things, Paul tells us to be filled with the Holy Spirit because while the physical wine of this world is temporary, the wine of the Spirit is eternal.
When you have the Spirit, you’re not controlled by the circumstances or pleasures of this world. That’s why the Bible says it’s because of the Lord’s mercy that we are not consumed. The Holy Spirit helps you to say no when you want to say yes. It helps you walk away from something that you would normally walk into.
With all of this in mind, let’s live our lives surrendered to the Holy Spirit and under the influence of His power; and let’s not succumb to the pressures of this world that try to influence us instead.
