Money Isn’t Everything
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)
Our culture today is one that values money and wealth. If you have a lot of money, more people want to work for you, more people want to befriend you, and more people want to date you. Wealth appears to equate to attraction. But as believers, we should not fall into the trap of thinking like the world when it comes to money. In fact, Scripture cautions us over and over about how dangerous the love of money can be and how it can affect our lives if we overprioritize earthly wealth.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
I think if Jesus wanted to add to that statement today, he would warn us by saying, “Be careful what you prioritize.” He was trying to tell them then and us now that you have to be careful not to let possessions fool you, and don’t make money your God.
So the next time you go out on a date or the next time you decide to hang out with a person, you need to find out about more than what they possess. Instead, you better take the time to discover who they really are underneath all of the possessions and belongings. There’s so much more to life and so much more to relationships than money. And our lives and our relationships will be so much better the quicker we learn that truth.
