A Script For A Good Life
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. – Proverbs 19:21
If you are looking for God’s will in a conventional way, you just might miss God altogether. Think about it. If you take a look at Scripture and the accounts of God’s character, He rarely takes the conventional, predictable path as He guides His children.
No one would have understood why Noah was building the ark. In reality, Noah probably didn’t understand. No one would have agreed that Abraham’s route to greatness would start with separating himself from his homeland to go to an undisclosed place. And who could have discerned that God was using Joseph’s prison stint as a pipeline to the palace?
While we often assume that God’s will for our lives involves having a great job, a stable family, and a big salary, we must never forget that it was also God’s will for John to be exiled, Paul to be imprisoned, Job to be tested by Satan, the rich ruler to give away all of his possessions, and for Jesus to be crucified.
If we were to write a script for our lives, it would most assuredly not include those things if the choice were up to us. But God is able to do the unimaginable. He is able to perform the inconceivable; but for that to happen, we must have a vision of God’s will that is broad enough, an image of our lives that is expansive enough, and a faith in God’s power that is strong enough to trust that He will do what He said He would do, even if it is outside the lines of our expectations.
Unfortunately, the lines we place around our lives are limitations imposed by us. They are our boundaries. They are our borders, and they are our parameters, not God’s. He is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we could ever ask, think, or imagine. But for it to happen He has to color outside the lines sometimes.
