Redeeming The Time
"Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil." - Ephesians 5:15–16
Time is one of our most precious resources, yet it's often the one we manage least intentionally. Paul's instruction to make the most of our time reflects wisdom's understanding that how we spend our days ultimately determines the impact and legacy of our lives.
The phrase "making the most of the time" literally means "buying back the time" or "redeeming the time." This suggests that time can be wasted or invested, squandered or leveraged for eternal purposes. Wisdom helps us distinguish between urgent activities that demand immediate attention and important activities that align with our deepest values and God's purposes.
Wise time management recognizes that rest and recreation are not luxuries but necessities for sustainable living. Jesus regularly withdrew from crowds to pray and recharge, modeling the importance of sabbath rhythms in our lives. Wisdom creates space for both productivity and renewal, work and worship.
This principle also applies to how we prioritize relationships and service opportunities. Time spent investing in people, especially those who cannot repay us, reflects eternal values. Time spent advocating for justice, caring for the vulnerable, and building God's kingdom has lasting significance that extends far beyond our earthly lives.
Prayer:
Lord, help us use our time wisely, investing in what matters most to You. Give us discernment to distinguish between urgent and important, and courage to prioritize eternal values over temporary pressures. Amen.
