Prayer For All Saints
"Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints." - Ephesians 6:18
Prayer is essential to justice work because it connects our efforts to God's power and aligns our hearts with His purposes. We need to pray not just for our own involvement but for all who are working for justice and equity around the world.
Injustice often feels overwhelming—too big, too complex, too entrenched. When we pray, we remember that we are not alone, and that God's resources are infinitely greater than our own. Our prayers join a chorus that stretches across continents and generations, a community of believers who trust in God's ability to bring change where human will alone falls short.
Praying for all the saints includes praying for those who are suffering injustice, those who are working to address it, and even those who are perpetuating it. We pray for transformation of hearts, systems, and structures that cause harm. True justice requires more than good intentions; it requires the Spirit’s guidance so our efforts lead to restoration and peace, not further division.
Persistent prayer keeps us dependent on God rather than relying solely on our own efforts or strategies. It reminds us that lasting change requires God's intervention, not just human activism. Through prayer, we invite God to expose areas of hidden bias, deepen our compassion, and open doors that might otherwise seem sealed shut.
Prayer also sustains us for the long haul of justice work. When we're discouraged, overwhelmed, or facing opposition, prayer connects us to the source of strength and hope that enables us to continue. The act of lifting others up—by name, by need, or by region—transforms our hearts, binding us to one another in holy solidarity and in care for the world.
Make prayer a regular part of your justice work. Pray for specific issues, for people who are suffering, for leaders who make decisions, and for your own faithfulness in this calling. Ask God for wisdom and creativity in confronting injustice and for the perseverance to continue when results are slow. Celebrate small victories in prayer and grieve losses with God, trusting that every prayer is heard and woven into the broader story of redemption.
Remember also to give thanks for the witness of others who have walked this path before you. Prayer connects us to the "great cloud of witnesses"—those saints who have fought for justice in ages past, whose prayers have tilled the soil for the work we do today. By lifting our voices in prayer, we join them in hope, trusting God with what we cannot yet see.
God, I commit to praying regularly for justice issues and for all who are working to address them. Connect my efforts to your power and align my heart with your purposes. Deepen my compassion and open my eyes to where I am needed most. Sustain me and those I pray for with courage, wisdom, and hope. Amen.
